Ok, now I'm suspicious.

My car hunt just got harder or has it?

I want to buy a car and at the moment I'm leaning more towards used. The primary choice at the moment is or rather was the MK5 GTI. However a good one of those is around £8000 and I'm getting inpatient so I though maybe I should look at the Golf's cousins namely the Leon Cupra and the S3 but in the end that was pointless as those cars are double the Golf. So imagine my surprise to find the Golf's other cousin to be half the price.

The question is why? If this is legit then the Octavia VRS has just become first choice but if anyone can think of a good reason why, let me know because this is suspicious.

Perhaps name - Skoda was a pretty low end car back in its early days. However, they could also have been used as minicabs, apparently Octavias were a favourite in the UK because of their ample rear legroom.

If it is badge snobbery than that is a shame but lucky for me since the Octavia VRS is better than the Golf GTI and I will happily pay half price heck I might even buy two.

Taxis in Europe don't use gasoline engines though.

The interior is a bit worse in my opinion, then obviously the badge it's wearing probably account for the price

Now that I think about it I'm not so sure as I think Skoda is a better badge than Seat these days and 08 Seats Leons costs quite a bit.

True, diesels are favoured. VRSes come in diesel form as well.

I personally like skoda, but I can say I've met a fair few people who look down on the badge and arent aware theyre part of VW.

The Superb is mostly known for the legroom but the Octavia is average saloon legroom really.

I've a mate who has a VRs saloon and a VRs estate both petrol and they love them. Reliable, fast, handles good and when they aren't working the ranks and need the car for regular family stuff don't feel like they have compromised. Where I am in Northern England a quarter of the taxis are Octavias and Superbs. Brand snobbery goes right out of the window once you've driven one for a few miles.

Ones used as taxis tend to get thrown about a bit but are usually easily spotted with seatbelt nicks in the rear doors, scratched inside door pulls from sheer number of people getting in and out and really scuffed alloy wheels.

Check out Briskoda.net and ask about in the 'Skoda Octavia II (2004 - 2013) section.

'Phil-E' has a MY08 Octavia 1.9 PD DSG Elegance and a regular poster and always willing to help with advice.

See that's the thing. I've looked at many forums and the VRS seems to unanimously get the thumbs up so yeah the Octavia is first choice now.

The Briskoda forum is for all Skodas old and new and they are quite an honest and practical bunch to be fair and will happy tell you all the good and bad along with anything to watch out for when looking to buy.

The VRs has quite a following for both Fabia and Octavia in the VAG world.

Even though Skoda does suffer from a degree of badge snobbery still, but everyone that's been in our car has changed their tune a full 180 by the time they've got them home.
